First off, we would like to acknowledge that the rescue operates on custodial land of the oldest living civilisation in the world. This is a contested space, so we pay our respects to both the Jagera people and the Turrbul people and their Elders, past, present and emerging. We acknowledge the cultures of Aboriginal Australia, and that sovereignty was never ceded.

We're a dedicated rat rescue located at Sunnybank Hills, Brisbane!

Our rescue is a registered charity with a dedicated team, a supportive membership and a beautiful volunteer community, we have safehouses and transport volunteers across South East Queensland and work with some truly wonderful charity groups, exotics vets, businesses and associations. We're the only specialised rat rescue in Queensland running in an official capacity. And did I mention we really love rats?

From humble beginnings in 2017 when Grover began helping rats in need, we've now assisted thousands of rodents. Grover kept seeing rats in abusive or dangerous situations and saying "I can help with that." After safely rehoming the rehabilitated rats, people started to take notice and ask for help.

We take in rats from all situations. Once here, they are screened for health and temperament and receive any vet care they might need. If they are able, we then find them homes with well screened forever families! We NEVER euthanise for reasons other than quality of life, animals who aren't suited to go back out to new homes retire here at the rescue or in long-term foster homes where they can live out their days in peace under specialised care. We have many beloved 'permies' here for reasons such as advanced age or illness, human or rat aggression, or sometimes just because they need company in their twilight months after losing a cage-mate where their human family can still visit.

One of our biggest passions is helping and educating our community, when we're not actively taking in rats who need rehoming, rehabilitating or finding them their forever families, we love to do educational work! We aim to provide a nuanced and evidence based approach to welfare, and proudly work with the public and educational institutions to improve welfare for rats and mice in all settings. Whether it's explaining the different types of hind leg degeneration to a worried owner, working with breeders to improve their housing, or assisting homeowners with choosing humane and realistic pest control options, we aim to meet people where they're at and improve welfare for the animals in whatever context it's needed.

The rescue is funded primarily through the personal efforts of the management team and volunteers, and donations from our community, if you want to get involved or support what we do, please feel free to get in touch!
